If you live in the UK and are missing your family or loved ones, we have good news. Those special people can apply for a UK family visitor visa to come on over and spend some quality time together. Whether you have a wedding, graduation or special occasion you want them here for or simply need a big old hug, read on to find out all about the UK Family Visitor Visa and how to apply here.

What Is A UK Family Visitor Visa?

A UK Visitor Visa allows a non EEA national to visit a UK based family member for up to six months. While this visa brings a lot of joy and happiness, it has a very strict application process. It comes under the subcategory of visitor visas and has the same eligibility criteria and application fees. Firstly you must make sure this is the right type of visa for you. Speaking to an immigration solicitor can advise whether your family member will qualify. Additionally, if they are on the list of nationals that require this type of visa before going any further with the application.

What Are The Requirements For A UK Family Visitor Visa?

In terms of eligibility the requirements for the family visitor visa are the same as a standard visitor visa. Before you go any further, have a little look through this list and make sure your visitor can tick all the boxes.

  • They are 18 or over
  • They intend to leave the UK after the visit
  • They can financially support themselves while here or you can sponsor them
  • Can prove their relationship with you
  • Can attend a biocentric appointment for an ID check
  • Has somewhere to stay in the UK

These are the basic eligibility conditions and documents and evidence may be required as evidence of the above.

How Do You Apply For A UK Family Visitor Visa?

You can apply for a UK Family Visitor Visa online, however it is important to prepare yourself. There is a lot of documentation that is required to ensure a successful application. Thus, having an immigration expert guide you through the process can help prevent minor errors and delays. These are the likely documents they can help you prepare;

  • Proof Of Accomodation – Your immigration expert can make sure your proof of reservation meets the requirements.
  • Finances – An experienced immigration expert can support you to provide all the relevant financial proof your visitor can fund their travel and stay.
  • Proof Of Relationship – Certain evidence must be provided that shows proof of your relationship, an immigration law firm in London can help you prepare this.
  • Intention To Leave – The Home Office will want reassurance that your visitor is leaving the UK after the visit.

Do You Need A Lawyer To Apply For A UK Family Visa?

While it is possible to do the application yourself online, consider a lawyer your life-jacket. The application process can be complex due to the extensive list of documents that are needed to support your case. One small error can result in delays and more costs of re-submitting the application. This could result in your family member missing the special event. Additionally, waiting even longer for them to be able to travel. An experienced expert can make the process a lot more straight-forward. They may also submit a letter of representation to maximise your chances of success.

How Long Does It Take And How Much Does It Cost?

These are two questions immigration lawyers get asked a lot! A decision can take up to three weeks to process and you can apply up to three months before the planned visit. It is highly recommended that you start a little before to ensure time and use an immigration lawyer to prevent any delays. There are priority services available for extra fees;

  • Application Fee – £127
  • Priority Fee – £500 – (processes visa in five working days)
  • Super Priority Fee – £1000 (processes visa in one day)

If you are ready to get started, the sooner the better. This leaves plenty of time to get all the paperwork in order and be enjoying that big hug at the airport!
